The knee is one of the largest and the most complex joints in the body. The joint is comprised of three bones: the thighbone (femur), shinbone (tibia), and kneecap (patella), which sits at the front of the joint to protect it. Four main ligaments, whose primary function is to stabilize the joint, connect these bones. These four ligaments include the lateral collateral ligament (LCL), medial collateral ligament (MCL), posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), and the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).

Additionally, the knee joint has a wedge-shaped piece of cartilage, known as the meniscus that acts as a shock absorber between the femur and the tibia. The main function of the meniscus is to protect the articular cartilage that covers the ends of the bones, as well as reduce friction between them. There are two menisci in the knee joint: the medial and the lateral meniscus.

The knee joint is complex, with a number of components making it susceptible to a variety of injuries. Even though most of the injuries can be treated through non-surgical measures, many will require surgical intervention.

Knee Pain Treatments

There are many different treatment options that may help relieve knee joint pain. The orthopedic surgeon will begin the orthopedic evaluation with commonly used tests, such as medical history, physical examination, X-rays, and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) tests if needed. Medical history is considered when evaluating the overall health and possible causes of the patient’s joint pain. Physical examination helps confirm the potential diagnosis of the joint problem, as well as the identification of range of motion, swelling, skin condition, and strength.

Depending on the results of the evaluation, most likely the orthopedic surgeon will first recommend non-surgical procedures such as physical therapy, medications and rest. If those treatments fail to alleviate knee pain, surgical intervention may be necessary.

Total Knee Replacement

A total knee replacement procedure usually lasts approximately two hours, in which the orthopedic surgeon will remove the damaged cartilage and bone material. After cleaning the joint, the surgeon will position the new metal, plastic, or ceramic components to restore the joint’s function and mobility.

Knee Arthroscopy

According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), more than four million knee arthroscopies are performed worldwide each year. Minimally invasive knee arthroscopy involves the insertion of small camera through a tiny incision to provide a view from inside of the knee joint. The camera and real-time imaging gives the orthopedic surgeon a clear view of the inside of the knee, helping diagnose and treat the injury efficiently.
