Arthritis Information
A joint is where the ends of two or more bones meet; for example, the bones of the lower leg (tibia and fibula) and the thighbone (femur) form the knee joint. The hip joint is where the top of the femoral head (thighbone) meets the acetabulum (pelvis).
A smooth tissue of cartilage covers the ends of the bones in a joint, and prevents friction between them. The synovium, a fibrous lining, produces a fluid that also helps reduce friction and wear in a joint. Ligaments connect the bones, and give stability and power to move them.
Arthritis is a disease in which a joint becomes inflamed, causing stiffness and pain. There are several forms of arthritis, which cause lost work time and serious disability for many people. The most common forms include: osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and traumatic arthritis.
Types of Arthritis
There are several different types of arthritis affecting adults and younger patients; however, the most common forms seen and treated include:
Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, as it results from overuse, trauma, or degeneration of the joint cartilage. It is more often seen in weight bearing joints, such as the knee, hip, or spine. In this type of arthritis, the joint becomes inflamed and the cartilage covering the bone gradually wears out, causing swelling and a great deal of pain.
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid Arthritis is a long lasting disease that affects many parts of the body, but mainly the joints. In this form of arthritis, the body’s immune system begins to produce substances that attack the body, causing the joint lining to swell and invade the surrounding tissues. Meanwhile chemical substances attack and destroy the joint surface. According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, it is estimated that 1% of the world’s population has rheumatoid arthritis.
Traumatic Arthritis
This type of arthritis is similar to osteoarthritis, as it is the result of a severe injury to the joint and may develop years after a fracture, ligament injury, or meniscus tear. This form of arthritis is also often the result of degenerative wear of the cartilage.
Symptoms of Arthritis
The most common symptoms for arthritis include:
- Weakness in the muscle
- Tenderness to touch
- Limited range of motion
- Pain and stiffness
Orthopedic Evaluation

Dr. Hartman will first evaluate the patient through a series of exams, including a medical history review, physical evaluation, and imaging resources, such as an X-ray or MRI. After this evaluation, the orthopedic surgeon will decide the best treatment option for the specific patient.
After the evaluation process is completed, the orthopedic surgeon will most likely suggest non-surgical treatments, such as physical therapy, medications, and resting. If those procedures fail to alleviate joint pain, the orthopedic surgeon may recommend surgical intervention.
The most common surgical procedures to alleviate arthritis pain include:
